Why Watercolors On Wee Hours?

It all started when I picked up a brush in the wee hours to help my late cat, Harper, settle his zoomies. Our quiet nightly ritual shaped the name.

That was during the pandemic in 2021, and I’ve been painting almost everyday since. My work is deeply inspired by nature and delightful powered by cats and ghosts.

About the Artist

Hi, I’m Alex, short for Alexis Dominique Cortel Limpiado, a full-time artist and watercolorist behind “Watercolors On Wee Hours”

I work primarily with watercolors, a journey I began in 2021. Before college, I spent about 5 years studying the fundamentals of drawing under the guidance of our local instructor, Mr. Frankie Lim, whose mentorship laid the foundation for my artistic practice. I later earned a Fine Arts degree from the University of San Carlos. After college, I didn’t paint for 10 years while working as a graphic artist, before returning to painting full-time.

Originally from the Philippines, I’m now based in Frederick, Maryland, where I create from my home studio. I’m a member of MAA or Montgomery Arts Association and a BWS or Baltimore Watercolor Society Signature Artist.

My botanical works are exercises in skill and precision, my whimsical pieces invite the imagination to wander, and my sceneries offer a gentle breath of calm. These three subjects are my favorite to explore and share through my art.

Where’s the studio and where’s the art journey going?

My studio is a cozy second room in our apartment in Frederick, MD. If you’d like a relaxed, no pressure way to see my work, you can schedule a studio visit by emailing me at watercolorsonweehours@gmail.com with the subject “Studio Visit”.

In the coming years, I’ll continue sharing my art through in-person events like festivals, shows and exhibitions as well as online through social media. My goal is to keep creating works that are meaningful to me, bring joy to others and spark a connection with their inner child.

Looking ahead, I hope to offer small group watercolor lessons in my home, sharing the joy of painting with others.

Is there anything beyond watercolor?

Watercolor will remain my focus for the next 5-10 years, following where the medium continues to lead me; There’s just so much to learn, explore and express here.

That said, I‘ve spent a year painting murals and loved working on a larger scale. Occasionally, I might take a break from watercolor and paint your home with florals and other whimsical designs.
